Having been a family in receipt of the wonderful support that is unique to Home-Start, I decided to become a volunteer in 2005 and have never looked back.
My first family had 5 boys under 6 and mum was understandably feeling a little challenged. Going in for that first introduction visit is always a little daunting but remembering that you are there as a friend and that you have the backup of the organisers, either by email, phone or in person gives you the courage you need.
Nobody has all the answers, and each family has its own issues. Volunteering has presented some real challenges and has made me very inventive in problem solving. I have made some friends and like to feel have made a small difference along the way.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with Home-Start but now my children are grown, I am pursuing my alternative therapy interests and have an ultimate goal of running a wellbeing centre where everyone is welcome to come and meet new friends.
I would like to wish good luck to all existing and future volunteers.
