Our Wellness Walks project has been developed to provide a socially distanced way for Dorset families to get outside, connect with others, make new friends, have fun and exercise. Families who are currently receiving one-to-one or group support are invited to join on a weekly basis.
We have continued to support families throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, adapting our services so that we have always been there for them. Whilst helping families, our groups leader recognised that the mental health and wellbeing of children was deteriorating, and they were struggling with a lack of social interaction, exercise and being outdoors particularly those without outside space. This project has been created to tackle this.
The ‘Wellness Walks’ take place 4 times a week and during each hour long session, our trained staff also provide 1-1 emotional support to parents, listening to any worries confidentially and without judgement.
Families are encouraged to choose the location of the walks from a variety of local parks, trails, and beaches. The walks are a free and easily accessible way of combatting isolation and improving children’s health and wellbeing.
Seven benefits of outdoor play for children:
- Learning
- Social skills
- Creativity
- Health
- Independence
- Well-being
- Exploration
Outdoor activities and fresh air have actual measurable physical health benefits. Additionally, when outside, children are likely to engage in active play for at least an hour a day.
Time outside with other children has proven to soothe them, lowering the risk of hyperactivity and depression. It also enhances their ability to engage with others in the future.
