A Family’s Story

This family consisted of Mum (a healthcare professional) and 7 children living in a 3-bedroom home in Dorchester. 4 of the children were on an ASD pathway and 2 had other medical needs. The youngest two children were traumatic twin births, born several weeks premature in July 2023.

Home-Start Wessex supported the family around the home, allowing Mum space to get housework and paperwork done, became an extra pair of hands for appointments, and offered a listening ear and a safe environment to open up.

The family home began to feel calmer and more organised. Home-Start Wessex signposted to local services and opportunities in the community, reducing Mum’s isolation and improving wellbeing.

“I feel like I have come through something big! Everything was a fog since just before the twins were born until now. I feel like I am taking better care of myself which means I can think about my children and what they need. My Home-Start volunteer has been amazing taking the twins on a walk in the pram and giving them their bottles so I can get a single job done. I felt like I finally had a cheerleader. She helped me see what a big thing I have been through, and I feel stronger to face what comes. Things aren’t perfect and they never will be, but I know I can get through it.”
